Trade 76 | Pole Pole Bungalows

It's not uncommon, as with any work, that an initial message interested in my project doesn't turn into anything and it can be for any number of reasons. So when, among a flurry of emails after the recent CNN article, I received a message from a lodge on a small island off the coast of Africa interested in a trade I didn't expect too much - I wasn't anywhere near Africa for the coming months. But I kept on getting replies. The conversation on how to make it work went back and forth until I was on the kind of plane that you only have to 'check in' for 15 minutes before take off. The last of three flights that picked me up off Hong Kong and set me down on Mafia Island.

Get up whenever, eat when you like, do as you feel. Relax. This is the Mafia way. The only timing we are strict about is the tides; they are your only master here.
